This session will help clinicians better understand the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) theoretical model by reviewing the six core therapeutic process of ACT which make up the "Hexaflex". These six core processes include contacting the present moment, defusion, acceptance, self-as-context, values, and committed action. Clinicians will learn how to use the ACT Matrix, developed by Kevin Polk, and the ACT Life Map, developed by Timothy Gordon, as a way to introduce the six core processes with their clients in individual or group therapy spaces.
PRESENTATION OBJECTIVES:
- Participants will understand Acceptance and Commitment Theraphy (ACT) theoretical model.
- Participants will learn the Six Core Therapeutic Process of ACT that make up the "Hexaflex".
- Participants will learn how to use the Life Map exercise as a way to introduce the "Hexaflex" model into individual or group therapy sessions.

Jonathan Butz, LCPC
Principal Group Therapist - Compass Health Center
Jonathan Butz has been in the mental health field for over 20 years and is licensed to practice in both Illinois and Wisconsin. Jon's undergraduate degrees are in philosophy and psychology, and he hold a master's degree in clinical psychology with a counseling specialization. Jon is currently completing an ACT fellowship at the University of Chicago's Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice. His experience includes delivering ABA therapy for children diagnosed with spectrum disorders, working in community mental health outpatient practices, inpatient settings, private practice, managing residential facilities for the chronically mentally ill, and for the last ten years has worked in the partial hospitalization program/intensive outpatient program (PHP/IOP) at Compass Health Center. As Principal Group Therapist at Compass Health Center Chicago he is responsible for delivering evidenced based group therapy, curriculum development, as well as the training and onboarding of all over 18 program staff in CBT, DBT, and ACT modalities. Jon also provides supervision and consultation for staff members looking to obtain LPC and LCPC licensure within the state of Illinois. Jon is a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS) and was previously a member of Northeastern Illinois Universities Advisory Board aimed at developing clinical excellence and a more robust curriculum to continue meeting standards outlined by the Counsel for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Jon is currently developing and recording The Wise Mind Happy Hour Podcast alongside his good friend, and fellow therapist, Kelly Kilgallon LCSW, which explores therapeutic concepts along with the vulnerable side of how therapists try to implement coping skills in their own lives.
